behold the power of internet.

One of the most amazing things to me about the internet is that it is

essentially nullifying borders...allowing for people to form their own

bridges to people and ideas across the world in ways that are

unrestricted by party line, embedded ideologies and the traditionally

high cost of communications. time and time again in every part of the

world, events and facts that would once be buried and/or unknown are

being brought to light for all to see and weigh in on. it's truly an

amazing thing.

what is even more interesting is that this is not being done by some

"responsible media" or "political force" - rather, it's being

accomplished by everyday people like you and me who recognize that we

are an interconnected global community of human beings, whose

responsibility for the planet and the good of all people comes before

the wishes of the few or those of a minority of loud members that drown

out the voices of others.

case in point. can you imagine that at the time of the Tienanmen square

massacre in china that most of the populace was unaware that it had even

occurred...even years after the event? hundreds of student

demonstrators were killed that day while they peacefully demonstrated

for greater democratic rights for the people of china. they were fired

upon by their own military. can you imagine?

it would be impossible today. china today has more cell phones than the

united states has people. it's a statistical fact.

the fundamental problem that exists when we allow any governing body to

dictate our interests rather than serving them is apparent. who in my

generation didn't think of the soviets as paranoid, propagandic,

totalitarians?

who wants to go that way. really?

the beauty is that we no longer need the middleman to receive the

message. if we seek we shall find. this new technology allows us to

interconnect in ways that would once have been impossible and i for one,

welcome our new mass consciousness. it is vital to the progressive

agenda that the west has cherished for so long and that we had started

so easily to forget.

it's a beautiful thing.

but it's also a dangerous thing.

as technology increases so do it's abuses. facebook has been to court

countless times for privacy violations and the most recent twitter

ramblings of Rupert murdoch about piracy and internet theft come just on

the heels of his own company newscorp having been involved in some of

the most salaciously hideous breaches of privacy to be revealed in

recent years by a corporate media interest.

94 million dollars in lobby money to washington wasn't enough to censor

the internet. the people who stood tall and made a difference today. it

should be a reasonable rule of law, not the whim of corporations to

take down information without oversight or discretion.

what the people said yesterday was...we've had enough.

enough of a time in which the needs of the few are so quickly cemented

into law without consideration. the themes of the day.

over the years, i have spoken with people from all over the globe and it

has always occurred to me that the similarities that we have, ultimately

outweigh the differences. this is important because, as we are once

again ramping up to war in the middle east, i can reflect on the myriad

of people that i have met from there and say with very few exceptions,

that they too are nice enough folks, who, though they may have a

different value, have not been disrespectful to me, and have actually

agreed with me and my fundemental humanitarian viewpoints more than they

have disagreed. i even spoke with an iranian in luxembourg who shared

an interesting conversation about the end of bin laden with me. you

won't see that on the news. governments, ultimately, disagree more than

the people.

while we may disagree on the nature of the problems and solutions, there

is one thing of which i am certain...this continued conversation holds

the promise to give light to a future in which all voices can be heard

and all viewpoints made possible if only we have the courage to express

them. Today is one of those days. slowly but surely, the quiet masses

have begun to realize and demonstrate with a loud, yet peaceful voice

that enough is enough. we've given up enough of our freedoms without

question, sacrificed enough of our sanity, and have given enough of what

we have to those who seek power for the sake of the few.

i am proud of you today. not because of a particular stand that you

have taken or the position which you have, but because over the past

year i have seen so many of you actually standing for SOMETHING.

as a broader base of information becomes more readily available the

conversation grows and allows for a better understanding of the

multitude of viewpoints that exist and offers a platform from which to

present them. in this new age, alternative ideas and possibilities are

being presented for those who prefer to think for themselves and/or

exercise a healthy level of participation rather than following the

divisive ranks of outmoded social orders and the unconsidered acceptance

of fallacious dogma - from any side of the political spectrum. let this

be the goal. to gain knowledge and acceptance of things as they are,

not as we assume that they are or want them to be and from there make

them better. not just for ourselves, but for the future world that our

children will inhabit.

in a way, the internet has made a single mind of us all. it exists, as

conflicted as any one person ever was, but hopefully, in the end, it is

a mind conceived in possibility and hope rather than a mind conceived in

suicide. what good could come from that?

so on this day, there are no pictures. only these words...that is to

say...good on the people. i am proud of us. keep up the good work.
